Vigil for Catholic school girl who died at T in the Park

A candlelit vigil is to be held tomorrow in the hometown of 17-year-old Megan Bell, from Seaham, County Durham, a pupil at St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy in Sunderland.

Police have confirmed that  she was one of two people to die during T in the Park Music festival. The other was a 17-year-old named locally as Peter MacCallum from Lochgilphead, Argyll. The deaths are believed to be drug-related.

There were 429 recorded crimes and 54 arrests at the three-day music festival and police are also separately investigating an alleged rape of an 18-year-old during the festival.

Rejecting the crime figures, T in the Park organisers told The Herald that a more pro-active approach, which includes deploying more officers and including an on-site facility for reporting crime, skewed the figures. It was also argued that T in the Park attracted a younger demographic than some festivals south of the Border, which partially explained the statistics.
