Sister of murdered priest urges all to work together for peace

Roselyne Hamel, addressing an estimated 1,700 mourners at the late priest’s funeral in Rouen Cathedral, which was celebrated by Archbishop Dominique Lebrun of Rouen, said ‘let’s learn to live together, let’s be workers for peace’.

By Amanda Connelly

Her brother, Fr Jacques Hamel, was murdered in brutal attack by Islamic extremists last week, as they took Fr Hamel, two nuns and two parishioners hostage while the priest celebrated morning Mass in Saint Etienne-du-Rouvray.

ISIS later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Among those attending the funeral Mass was Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, while despite the rain hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects and watch the Mass on a screen outside the cathedral.

Archbishop Lebrun, thanked those Catholics in attendance attending as well as those from other religious background, particularly Jews and Muslims, who are ‘very affected and already decide to united for: ‘never again’”, as well as inviting people to come to church on August 15 to celebrate the Assumption of Mary, to show that ‘violence will not take over in their hearts’.

The attendance of people from other faiths follows on from the many Muslims who attended Sunday Mass as a show of support in the aftermath of the attack.
