7-BISHOP-@-FERNHILL

Bishop Toal enjoys a double celebration during recent visit to Fernhill School

Double celebrations took place at Fernhill School in Rutherglen last week as Bishop Joseph Toal of Motherwell marked his sixth year as a bishop by helping pupils celebrate their patronal feast Mass.

Bishop Toal visited the school on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, six years to the day since he was ordained Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, his former role.

Speaking to nursery, primary, and senior pupils at the fee-paying school, including those enrolled in the Caritas Award, the bishop was joined by school chaplain Fr Alex Stewart, before celebrating Mass. Headteacher Laura Murphy said the whole school was grateful to Bishop Toal for choosing to spend his anniversary with the pupils.

“It was a really nice visit,” she said. “The bishop was lovely and he is so kind with his time; he went round every single classroom, every single teacher, and probably spoke to every

single child in the school.”

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is marked each year in Fernhill, which was originally run by the Sisters of Notre Dame.
