POPE NETFLIX

New film to be released about Pope Francis

Pope Francis will soon be coming to Netflix fans around the world.

The streaming service has announced casting for a new film about the Holy Father’s relationship with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

It will follow the story of Pope Benedict’s election as pontiff and his subsequent resignation, with the drama exploring Pope Francis’ reluctance to become pope in 2013, and how his humility and dedication to the poor made him a force for change.

The new feature film will see an all-star cast, with Jonathan Pryce set to play Pope Francis and Anthony Hopkins to play Pope Benedict.

The film will be directed by Fernando Meirelles, who is famed for films such as City of God, with a script penned by Anthony McCarten, who wrote the Stephen Hawking biopic film The Theory of Everything and soon to be released The Darkest Hour about Winston Churchill’s early days as Prime Minister.

Filming is due to begin in November in Argentina, the homeland of Pope Francis.
