Pope says EU referendum result is ‘will of the people’
Brexit backed by 52% to 48% across Britain.
Pope Francis has said the result of the U.K.’s referendum to leave the European Union reflects the ‘will of the people’ and all now share a ‘great responsibility’ to ensure the well being of people in the UK.
Addressing reporters on the papal plane to Armenia this morning, the Holy Father said he had only read basic information about the result of the vote just before leaving Rome, but said he felt it was ‘the will of the people’.
“It demands great responsibility on our part,” he said, “to ensure the well being of the people in the United Kingdom, and the coexistence of the people on the European continent. So I wait.”
The UK voted yesterday to leave the EU by 52% to 48%. Scotland voted to Remain by 62 by 38% and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said this morning the result made another referendum on Scottish independence ‘highly likely’.
