Cardinal calls for religious freedoms to be respected

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Britain’s most senior Catholic clergyman, will make a stirring defence of the Christian faith today, saying religious freedoms in the United Kingdom are not as they ‘should be.’

Addressing at the annual Carol service for Christians in Government at Westminster Cathedral, London, the cardinal will urge those present to uphold ‘freedom of religious expression’.

Referring to the recent Westminster 2010  ‘Declaration of Christian Conscience’ the cardinal will say that all those present should consider endorsing ‘it does uphold the rights of conscience of all peoples particularly those in positions of responsibility and especially concerning Christian beliefs and values.’

He is also expected to speak about the ongoing debate over ongoing debate over anti-Catholic bigotry in Scotland saying Catholics here ‘have raised their voices against sectarianism and intolerance directed against the Church.’

“Clearly, these actions show that freedom of religious expression, a basic human right, is not upheld in our midst as widely and as completely as it should be,” he said.
