Aberdeen City Council expected to buy Catholic primary for just over £12 million

St Joseph’s school building is currently leased by the council until 2017 from the Society of the Sacred Heart

St Joseph’s Primary School is to be bought by Aberdeen City Council for a maximum bid of £12.75 million.

The school building (above) is currently leased by the council from the Society of the Sacred Heart for around £750,000. The lease ends on July 31 2017 and the purchase will include the school building, grounds and two homes occupied by two nuns, who are expected to be offered lifetime tenancies.

Members of the council’s finance committee are said to have taken the decisions after uncertainty over the continuation and rising cost of the lease. A final price for the purchase has yet to be agreed though the council has decided to pay no more than £12.75 million.

“Education is a priority for this council and by agreeing to purchase St Joseph’s RC School and its grounds shows a genuine commitment by us, not only to the school community but also to RC education in the city,” Angela Taylor, convener of education and children’s services, said.
