1 St Paul's Muirhouse Closure 004

14-year-old charged in connection with fire at St Paul’s Church

The Edinburgh church was set-alight on Sunday evening following its closure in October

Police have arrested and charged a 14-year-old in connection with a fire at St Paul’s Church in Edinburgh.

The blaze on Sunday night caused extensive damage to the closed church in Muirhouse Avenue, Muirhouse.

A police spokesperson said the teenager would now be reported to the Children’s Reporter. Enquiries are ongoing to trace others believed to be involved and police are appealing for anyone with information that can assist officers with their investigation to come forward.

A closing Mass of thanksgiving (above) was celebrated at St Paul’s on October 10 by Archbishop Leo Cushley and the then parish priest despite a campaign from some parishioners to keep the church open.

Since its closure, the building had been broken into a number of times, and a fire had been lit in a skip outside the church on the evening of the closing Mass.

Archbishop Cushley visited the church on Monday and assured the local community of his thoughts and prayers, giving special thanks to the emergency services.
