Edinburgh hosts annual cathedral conference

Edinburgh’s three cathedrals, including St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, are preparing to host a conference this week by an organisation that aims to engage visitors in places of Christian worship.

Cathedral Plus, a networking group of people who are responsible for visitor care and education in cathedrals, abbeys and greater churches, will bring its annual conference to Scotland for the first-ever time this week.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, will attend the conference, alongside his contemporaries from other cathedrals.

Judy Davies, secretary of Cathedral Plus, explained that delegates from across the UK and Ireland will next week take part in workshops and visit some of Edinburgh’s visitor attractions to talk with their visitor and education staff.

“It is also a brilliant opportunity to network and compare each others’ work,” Ms Davies said. “We are having a whisky tasting session, a ceilidh and a conference dinner in The Merchants’ Hall to which Cardinal Keith O’Brien has accepted an invitation.”

The conference, which is being held at St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral (above), St Giles Church of Scotland Cathedral and St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, will take place over three days starting today.
