Both of Scotland’s archbishops give messages of hope amid church closures

Scottish bishops are working alongside authorities to establish when churches can be reopened, the Archbishop of St Andrews & Edinburgh has confirmed.

In a video message posted on Twitter, Archbishop Leo Cushley said: “Know that we’re doing what we can as bishops to speak to the government and authorities so that we are exploring how to move forward, what the next steps will be and how to open our churches as soon as we possibly can do so.”

the archbishop added that it is important that the reopening of churches across Scotland must be done safely. done properly and ‘with a sense of public responsibility.’

He continued: “So please pray for that, let’s work for that, and hopefully we will all be able to get together to pray and offer up the sacrifice as we love to do as Catholics on Sunday, as soon as possible.”

Staying positive

Meanwhile, in Glasgow Archdiocese, Archbishop Philip Tartaglia encouraged Catholics to stay positive as the lockdown continues.

In his weekly reflection on Sunday April 26, the archbishop said: “You will tell me that I keep saying, my dear friends, this time will pass. When, I do not know, but it will.

“We will come together again. together we will once more recognise the risen Lord in the breaking of the bread. Finally, the priest will take priest, break it and give it to you to eat.

“We will once more enjoy sacramental communion with out beloved risen Lord Jesus. We will, together, once again, be inspired by him to praise his name and to follow his message. What a day that will be.”
