US places of worship could reopen soon, according to draft White House guidelines

The reopening of places of worship are included in a series of guidelines drafted by the White House.

In newly drafted guidelines, a section of faith communities says the government ‘may consider and accept of reject’ the guidelines, consistent with their own faith tradition.’

The 17-page draft, which is based on the recommendations from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, was published by The Washington Post on April 27.

It says faith communities should consider limiting public gatherings, such as Mass, during the first phase of reopening.

It also says faith communities should consider offering means of virtual participation in religious services for those who are vulnerable or quarantined.

The report recommends that faith communities should consider temporarily limiting the sharing of worship materials and should place collection boxes in one place, rather than pass them around to parishioners in places of worship.

Choir and music group members should also stay well-apart from each other, the document suggests.

It also encourages people to continue good hygiene practices, and asks that people aged two and over wear face masks or to cover their faces as best they can.

Places of worship are also to check that ventilation is of a good standard, and the opening of windows and usage of fans is encouraged.

The White House is expected to release its final report in early May.

Earlier this month, the White House announced reopening would take place in three stages, with large venues opening under strict social distances rules and schools and daycare centres remaining closed.
