Pope Francis pays tribute to the late Baroness Thatcher

British Prime Minister David Cameron has received a telegram on behalf of Pope Francis, offering his condolences following the death of Margaret Thatcher from a stroke yesterday at the age of 87. (Full text below)

In the telegram, the Holy Father praised the ‘Christian values’ which underpinned Britain’s first female Prime Minister’s ‘commitment to public service and to the promotion of freedom among the family of nation.’

Mr Cameron paid tribute yesterday to Thatcher’s ‘lion-hearted’ love of her country, calling her the ‘patriot prime minister’ and Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond called her ‘truly formidable,’ adding on television last night that it was possible to respect a politician like her while totally disagreeing with her policies.

Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster said earlier yesterday that he was praying for the repose of the soul of Baroness Thatcher.

The ‘Iron Lady’ was Britain’s first and, to date, only female Prime Minister, leading a Conservative Government for 12 years from 1979 to 1990. Yesterday in death, as in life, her legacy appeared to divide the country with some praising her stance of the Falklands and her embrace of a free market economy and others unable to forgive her actions against trade unions, the H block prisoners in Ireland and the nationally unpopular ‘Poll Tax,’ introduced first in Scotland.

Here is the full text of the telegram sent by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone on behalf of the Holy Father

The Right Honourable David Cameron, MP

The Prime Minister

His Holiness Pope Francis was saddened to learn of the death of Baroness Margaret Thatcher. He recalls with appreciation the Christian values which underpinned her commitment to public service and to the promotion of freedom among the family of nations. Entrusting her soul to the mercy of God, and assuring her family and the British people of a remembrance in his prayers, the Holy Father invokes upon all whose lives she touched God’s abundant blessings.
