Pope Francis blesses a nun during visit to Missionaries of Charity soup kitchen and women's shelter at Vatican

Women’s voices must be heard, Pope says

During his general audience, the Holy Father stressed that equal authority of women and men must be recognised in the Church and global society, as must their complimentary differences

Pope Francis told thousands of pilgrims this morning that the world must recognise the weight and authority of women’s voices in both society and the Church.

Continuing his catechesis on the family during his weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square, the Holy Father reflected on the role of women in society and the complimentary differences between the sexes.

There is much work to be done, the Pope said, in order to give women due recognition, arguing that the way in which Jesus considered women shines a powerful light on a long road still to be tread, a road upon which we have only taken a few steps and which is ‘is to be travelled with creativity and audacity.’

The Pope also said that ‘the difference between man and woman is not for opposition or subordination, but for communion and procreation.’

“The woman is able to see things with different eyes that complement the thinking of men,” he said, before addressing the aims of some to ‘annul sexual differences,’ saying that removing the difference between the sexes ‘is the problem, not the solution.’

Pope Francis added that ‘the challenge faced by the Church, and by all believers and families, is to rediscover the beauty of God’s plan, the imprint of his image in the covenant between man and woman.’
