Special needs children celebrate right to religious education success

Recently Confirmed Lanarkshire children with special needs are celebrating after winning the right to the same entitlement to receive Catholic religious education as their mainstream peers.

The children, who were Confirmed earlier this month in Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral, Motherwell, attend specialist schools and bases in North and South Lanarkshire. During the past 18 months great progress has been made in discussions with South Lanarkshire Education Authority about religious education provision for the pupils from Buchannan High and Drumpark Primary in Coatbridge, Firpark Secondary and Firpark Primary in Motherwell, Victoria Park School, Carluke, Robert Owen Primary, Lanark, and Sanderson High, East Kilbride.

Currently discussions are underway with North Lanarkshire Education Authority to achieve a similar entitlement for pupils.

The children’s parents and staff said they were ‘grateful to both authorities for their co-operation.’
