St Columbkille’s receives £15,000 from National Churches Trust

The funds will go towards renovating the Motherwell Diocesan church and improving access for those with disabilities

St Columbkille’s in Rutherglen has been awarded £15,000 by the National Churches Trust to go towards renovations that will increase access for people with disabilities.

The Community Grant will help fund the installation of accessible toilets as part of a major project to help make the Motherwell Diocesan church more accessible and reduce energy use.

The project also involves renewing heating, lighting, pews and the PA system, installing new boilers, building a new entrance porch and access ramps.

Originally founded in 1851 the parish of St Columbkille’s was consecrated in 1940, being one of the few church buildings completed following the onset of the Second World War.

The building is recognised as being of outstanding architectural significance— Designed by architects Gillespie, Kidd & Coia in the period 1934-40, it is a Listed Building with Category A status.

The money is part of £607,000 to be paid out to churches across the UK.
