Glasgow Catholic businessman named as a Labour peer

Sir Willie Haughey may take the title of Lord Gorbals

Well-known Glasgow Catholic businessman Sir Willie Haughey has been made a member of the House of Lords.

Sir Willie Haughey (above), who has been newly appointed as a working Labour peer in the House of Lords, has suggested he may take the title of Lord Gorbals.

The founder of Glasgow firm City Refrigeration Holdings, is a long-time backer of the Labour Party, donating £1.3million to them, and said he will use his seat in Westminster’s second chamber to pursue his interests in youth employment.

Johann Lamont, Labour’s Scottish leader, said he would be ‘a strong voice for the city and for the values he believes in.”

A former director of Celtic football club, Sir Willie is one of 30 nominees who will take their seats when the House of Lords returns from its summer recess next month. Others Scots include former Conservative leader Annabel Goldie and former Lib Dem MSP Jermey Purvis.
