24-SCIAF LENTFEST AUCTION

Art auction to raise money for SCIAF’s Syria appeal

Archbishop of Glasgow backs Catholic aid agency's appeal; Scottish artist and musician collaborate for project

A Scottish artist and musician’s live collaboration will go under the hammer next month to raise money for Catholic charity SCIAF’s Syria Refugee Appeal.

Pastel sketches by Alexander Moffat RSA, inspired by and drawn during two concerts by renowned tenor and classical guitarist Martin Aelred, will be auctioned at St Aloysius’ Church, Glasgow, on Wednesday May 8.

The artist and singer collaborated for two innovative concerts at St Aloysius’ and Our Lady and St George’s Church, Glasgow, to help raise money for SCIAF’s Syria Refugee Appeal as part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow Arts Project’s Lentfest 2013 programme.

Both artists will be on hand at next month’s auction to share their thoughts on their collaboration and motivation for helping SCIAF.

Archbishop Philip Tartaglia of Glasgow has been supportive of this initiative to help the Catholic aid agency’s Syria refugee appeal.

“The situation for the people of Syria is dire and I would encourage people to be generous in their bids for these unique works of art,” Archbishop Tartaglia said. “I am grateful to the artists and to SCIAF for providing this new way for Scots to help some of the most needy and frightened people on the planet.”

The framed artwork will be open to view during an all-day exhibition at St Aloysius on May 8, before the auction begins at 7pm.

The artwork can be seen ahead of the auction at www.sciaf.org.uk.  Online bids can also be submitted.
